What is a championship?

Championships are major tournaments that represent a milestone in the gaming community. These are large, well-organized events that often take place every year. Examples of championship events include:

• National, state, or regional championships
• Major tournaments at gaming conventions
• Large annual tournaments that draw players from a wide area
• Events that are part of a championship series organized by the game publisher

Official championships
Championships organized or recognized by a game publisher or some other gaming authority are marked with gold laurels to reflect their official nature.
Unofficial championships
Championships organized by local gaming communities or independent organizations are marked with silver laurels.

Can my event be a championship?

YES! Contact us to request additions to the championship list.

Please contact us at least 60 days before the event date so that Longshanks has time to consider your request and prepare an award icon. Events that give less notice may not be considered.

Potential championships are considered on an individual basis, but the general guideline is that championships need to have a big impact on the gaming community. Some things we look for include:

Large

Championship events have 64 or more players.

Event size can count a single large event or include multiple mid-sized events that feed into a smaller finals (multiple heats at a convention, for example). If a championship is affiliated with a game publisher or part of a national/world championship series, the size requirement may be adjusted.

Public

A championship event or its qualifiers must be available to any players.

Invitationals are not accepted unless there is a public way to gain an invitation. Private or hidden championships are not allowed.

Visible

A championship should be publicized elsewhere (website, social media, etc.) and must be visible to the public on Longshanks at least 30 days before the event date.

Competitive

Championship events must be rated. This is to encourage the high levels of competitive play that championships should include.
